As a nation, we claim to love cats and dogs. Millions of households have pets, and billions of dollars are spent yearly on pet supplies and food. But as a nation, we should take a hard, sobering look at a different annual statistic: the millions of dogs and cats given up to shelters or left to die on the streets. And the numbers tell only half the story.
Every cat or dog who dies as a result of pet overpopulation whether humanely in a shelter or by injury, disease, or neglect is an animal who, more often than not, would have made a wonderful companion, if given the chance. Tremendous as the problem of pet overpopulation is, it can be solved if each of us takes just one small step, starting with not allowing our animals to breed. This is going to be a very special event! We have rallied around and gathered together rescue groups, shelters and animal foster homes to "spring" dogs and puppies, cats and kittens from "kill" shelters around the Central Florida area. My heart lies firmly with every neglected, abused or hurting animal in the world .. but my campaign is focused on the desperate animals in need of YOUR love in Central Florida ... and especially, Levy County Animal Shelter!
These animals are beautiful, innocent, healthy and have all the love in the world to give! They have done nothing wrong. Most have sadly ended up in the hands of the ignorant or abusive - leading to their final days being in a cold shelter waiting to die. And these pets know it ..... It is so easy to get caught up in our day to day activities and turn a blind eye to the fact that the majority of these adorable pets leave the shelter in a body bag.
Our Adopt-a-Thon is all about saving lives. Every single animal that is available for adoption at our event is a rescue ... and each one is waiting for that miracle .. the second chance at love. Although it is heart-breaking that these animals ended up being lonely, scared, hurt and neglected .. the bright side is that our event is full of true animal lovers (and in my opinion, angels on earth) who have come together for one cause - to find wonderful, loving, "forever" homes for each and every pet lucky enough to be selected to attend the event.
Even if you are not able to adopt a pet yet ... please bring your family, friends, neighbors ... and of course, your own pets! These sad little furballs sure do love attention! Come and hug all the animals, bring them a treat and just share your affection with them. They will so appreciate it.
Not only do we have the pleasure of finding homes for all these smaller, domesticated animals .. we are proud to invite Starting Over Animal Rescue from Floral City. Melissa will be bringing two horses. The first is a Tennessee Walking Horse called Noah. His story will bring a tear to your eye. She also hopes to be bringing along a 3 year old miniature/shetland pony who may be available to adoption to an experienced home. Be sure and bring apples, carrots and sugar cubes for these big kids!!
Making new friends (animal and human) can be thirsty work! Take a break and enjoy all the animal-loving vendors who are giving up their time to support this wonderful event. Russ and Daniel plan the show daily and work closely to create the "controlled chaos" that is The Monsters.
A musician since childhood, Daniel also contributes greatly to The Monster Band both writing and performing constantly on air and on stage. Daniel plays a number of instruments but sticks mostly to bass during the band’s live performances. To date, his work can be heard on 9 Monster CD’s of original music and 3 DVD’s.

Adopting a friend:
All Animals that are adopted or rescued from the Levy County Animal Services are required by Florida Law to be Spay/Neutered and also have a rabies vaccination. To adopt a male dog from the shelter the fee is $70.00, which covers neutering and rabies vaccination. To adopt a female dog from the shelter the fee is $85.00, which includes spaying and rabies vaccination. All adoptions are cash only. Due to the time factor all adoptions are done on a first come basis. There are no waiting periods if the animal is adoptable. You pay for the spay/neuter and rabies vaccination at the time of adoption and you have 30 days to have the procedure completed and paperwork returned from the vet. Sadly, Levy County Animal Shelter is a KILL shelter, which means every Thursday animals must die.

In order to adopt, you should live locally and have a fenced yard. If you live in an apartment or condo, please check with your landlord or homeowner's association to ensure dogs are allowed. You must sign our contract for the continued care of your new pet. If you can no longer care for a pet you have adopted from us, you must contact and return the animal for future placement. No animals are to be given away, returned to the shelter or humane society under any circumstances. Thank you!

Phoenix is a red short-haired chihuahua with a white patch on his chest. He is a very good-natured dog. His color looks like Georgia red clay or the Painted Desert. He is neutered and has had all his shots includes rabies. When he came to us he was very sick. He had two kinds of worms, including advanced heartworm, and kennel cough. He spent 20 days in ICU at the veterinary hospital before coming home Feb. 21. He nearly died. He must be on antibiotics for the next month. Phoenix is very obedient and a great dog that doesn't bark. He is very loyal and sweet. His adoption fee will include only his vet bills, which alone are $400, and the cost to save him from euthanasia. If you would like an application for this very special dog, please email us. What could be more natural than children helping animals? Most children love animals and given the opportunity will naturally find ways to help them. By encouraging their natural love of animals, parents and teachers can start the child on a life-long quest to better the conditions of the animals they come in contact with. Always stress to your child that all animals have feelings just like people do; they get hungry, thirsty, cold, sad and lonely. Make sure that your young child understands that animals feel pain, just like they do. Explain to your child that there are lots of ways that he or she can help the animals.A trip to the local animal shelter can be very educational for children.

"Noah" a TWH that was brought to an auction one step from starving to death. I paid $600.00 to keep him from continuing in the nasty ring of brokers. I will not be adopting this horse out at the time and believe by then he should be fit enough to ride that far and he is social enough to not stress with a busy day AND (if this one is still availiable) a 3yr old Registered Palomino paint shetland pony. Under weight and rescued from the auction. He is scared to death of thunder storms.
Noah is a 10 yr old registered Tennessee walking horse gelding. He was rescued from an auction ring. They were actually riding him in this condition. We paid basically $1.00 a pound for him equaled to $575.00 . He is approximately 500 pounds underweight. Every bone in his body can be seen and felt. He is not up for adoption at this point but can use a foster home or donations to help feed him. Pictured Below: Sunday is a registered 3 yr old Min. Horse gelding. He's the sweetest little guy and a BEAUTIFUL palomino paint. We rescued him from an auction ring and he was underweight. He's picking up weight nicely and is completely healthy. They shaved him down from head to shoulders but it won't take long to grow back. Sunday will ride on a lead line or halter and leadrope and he is broke to drive a cart. Sunday is also used to having a run in stall as he is scared of thunder storms. Sunday likes the company of goats , horses or other ponies but can be kept by himself. As long he gets his attention from his human companions then Sunday is a happy camper! .  Dianne and Maggie
Dianne is no longer coughing! For the first time since she was a tiny little puppy, Dianne can run and play like a regular puppy. She is no longer contagious with distemper. However, she has developed localized demodectic mange as a result of her weakened immune system. Phoenix Animal Rescue is committed to helping Dianne throughout her time in foster care and will continue supporting Dianne through her newest illness. When Dianne's condition is cleared up, she will be spayed and will then be available for adoption. Until then, she is still looking for a special needs foster home where she and her sister can play together.
Special Needs Foster
Dianne and her sister, Maggie, came to Phoenix Animal Rescue as three-week-old puppies whose mother was rejecting them. Maggie and Dianne were adopted by their surrogate mom, Becky, and were raised as Becky's puppies, along with their brother and sister. Becky nursed these four new puppies along with her own two puppies. Then Maggie and her sisters and brother got sick.
The distemper outbreak that hit Alachua County Animal Services had infected Dianne and her siblings while they spent a few days there. Within a week of getting sick, Dianne's brother died of pneumonia related to distemper. A couple of weeks later, her sister died of the same illness.
Maggie and Dianne were very sick with pneumonia and gastrointestinal upset caused by distemper. They were given every medicine thought to help and everyone hoped and prayed they'd make it. The odds were stacked against them and some people suggested they should be put to sleep because they were so sick. But they hung in there, kept eating, kept trying to play, and stayed with us. Then, they started gaining weight. Finally.
When they went to the vet for their checkup at three-and-a-half-months of age, Dianne and her sister weighed just over 10 pounds. That's about a third of what they should weigh at that age. Their illness took its toll, but they were getting healthier. Now, at four months of age, Maggie and Dianne are experiencing everything little puppies should. They play outside, run with their friends, wrestle with each other, chase balls, and play with squeaky toys. They are like regular, healthy puppies.
Maggie and Dianne are still coughing and are still contagious. What Maggie and Dianne need is a foster home where they can be together, to continue their crate training, and be allowed to be regular puppies with a few exceptions. They can be with adult, vaccinated dogs but cannot be with puppies younger than 5 months or unvaccinated adult dogs. Maggie and Dianne cannot leave their home and cannot go to Petsmart or Dog Park, because they can make other puppies and unvaccinated dogs sick. Maggie and Dianne can play in the yard, play with vaccinated adult dogs, and be regular puppies.
If you think you'd like to spend time with Maggie and Dianne, they could use the attention and socialization. They've spent almost their entire lives in the Director's home and they need more experience. They need to meet new people and new dogs. They need to play new games and learn new things. Maggie and Dianne need to be regular puppies and start to see the big world.

You will need to complete an adoption application, which is found on the website www.phoenixanimalrescue.org, under the button “Adoption Application.” Completing an application does not obligate you to adopt the dog you’re applying for. Because all of our dogs live in private home settings, we require a pre-approved application before you can meet the dog you’re interested in.
Once your application has been submitted, a rescue volunteer will review your application and contact you about any questions they might have. They will set up your playdate with the dog you want to meet. If all goes well at the playdate, you can adopt and take home your new dog!
When you pay the adoption fee for your dog, you are helping support Phoenix Animal Rescue’s efforts to continue saving dogs from area shelters. 100% of your adoption fee is used for the care of the dogs and puppies at Phoenix Animal Rescue. Any amount you donate over your adoption fee is greatly appreciated and will help PAR save more dogs and puppies.

Hi, my name is Bristol…...I’m a 2 year old lab/boxer mix…...I was rescued from the county shelter with my brothers and sisters when we were just pups…...we had a really rough start in life because of the abuse and neglect we endured even at a young age…...my foster mom, Jody, would be glad to tell you our miracle story......we were all so sick from mange, fleas, ticks, intestinal worms, and starvation......I'm really a lucky boy to just be alive......I’m a little shy around new people….but, if you could give me a chance….you’ll see just how loving I can be….I weigh about 55 lbs….I'm crate trained....I’ve been neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, on flea and heartworm prevention….I get along great with other dogs….In fact, I play everyday with my foster brothers and sisters in the little "dog park" my foster Dad made for us!....I’m hoping for a “forever home” where I can have a yard to play in, a friend to play with, a pool to swim in, and also be an inside boy so I can be close to my new family….by the way….I LOVE water….“cookies”.... peanut butter…and toys........Hopefully you'll want to come meet me and fall in love.............Thanks, Bristol

About the Ranch
Greyhound Ranch Adoptions, Inc. is a non-profit Greyhound rescue and adoption organization located in Central Florida. The fundamental mission of the Ranch is to provide shelter and medical care to Greyhounds who have retired from racing activities. Our mission is achieved by providing foster-care and rehabilitation programs for these beautiful canines as they transition from the life of a regimented trained athlete to a household pet. The Ranch is also dedicated to readying the Greyhounds for adoption by greyt parents into qualified homes, and educating the public regarding the history and development of the Greyhound breed.
Adopt a Forever Friend
So you want to adopt a Greyhound? Here are some Ranch guidelines to assist you.
All Greyhound placements are on a first-come, first-reserved basis.
All Greyhounds are adopted by application only and the adopting family must agree that the Greyhound will be an indoor pet as Greyhounds are not suited for a life outdoors or chained to a leash.
At the time of adoption, all Greyhounds (except for puppies) are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, tested for heartworms, micro-chipped, have had their teeth cleaned and their toenails trimmed. A small adoption fee is therefore charged to cover the cost of these services.
All Greyhounds are on "Frontline" and come with a leash, collar, micro-chip information, and a booklet full of information to help you care for your Greyhound.
All Greyhounds are crate trained and they can be easily housetrained.
If you have a specific greyt dog in mind, make an appointment to see the Greyhound at the Ranchs next Meet & Greet where you can:
^ Complete an application Click here to access the GRA Greyhound application form
^ Pay a deposit to reserve a Greyhound which will be applied towards the adoption fee
^ Schedule a home visit where an adoption contract will be signed (all household members, including other pets, must be present)
If the Greyhound is to be adopted by a family, please remember that children must be at least 8 years of age
The Ranch is committed to each dog in the program for its entire life. Therefore, if there is ever a need to give up your Greyhound, it must be returned to the Ranch.
Although though the Ranch prefers placement within a 70 mile radius of Longwood, Florida, the Ranch will work with other adoption groups to provide placement of a dog outside of the Central Florida area
Even though all Greyhounds are greyt and the Ranch has many Greyhounds to choose from, you may identify the characteristics of the Greyhound you want and we will search through our vast network of adoption groups for an ideal match. Once a Greyhound is located, a representative will contact you to schedule a home visit with the Greyhound you have selected. An adoption contract will then be completed at the time of placement.

Another Chance Animal Rescue, Inc., dba Second Chance Rescue, is a Florida 501 (C) 3 Non-Profitrofit Organization. We take in abandoned, abused, neglected, and unwanted dogs (and sometimes other animals). We provide needed medical care, rehabilitation, and love. Then, we carefully adopt them into loving and forever homes. We are truly a no-kill shelter and are funded solely on donations. All donations are 100% tax deductible.

Our adoption fees vary ($40-$100) but do include all age appropriate vaccines, heartworm testing for dogs, feline leukemia/aids testing for kitties , worming, flea control and spay/neuter...
The ARNI foundation will have some cats for adoption and will also bring their book with horses pictures/stories that they have for adoption too!

The following group is unable to attend as they are located in Melbourne, Florida - but they have sent a "shout out" to all you wonderful, caring, future adoptive families in Central Florida!
They currently have the sweetest, senior dog in their shelter. This particular shelter has a "higher than average" kill rate. This means, this poor old girl is 99.9% sure to get euthanized - how on earth can she possibly compete with the cute puppies and the younger dogs. This is such a heart-breaking story .. and sadly, the theme of this entire event. This beautiful dog has given her lifetime just loving on her humans, giving her heart, mind and soul. And what do the humans give her? A death sentence in a cold shelter. I am having trouble writing this, I am so sad for this girl.
If you have room in your heart and home to adopt an older, quieter, well-mannered and super-sweet girl (she is NOT a pit-bull) -- please contact Jyni immediately. If you are committed to adopting her, we might even try to find a way to have this dog transported down to our event at Gibson Truck World in order for you to pick her up.
UPDATE: Both Joseph Waddell with Freddy's Hot Dog Cart and Crystal Callahan of Top Notch K9's have both offered to bring Pepper to our event. This old girl has been through so much - please will YOU come and adopt her on Saturday 15th March 2008?

Jason Hoffman
Jason Hoffman, founder of Critter Encounters, began rescuing reptiles in early 2000 in Los Angeles after receiving a call from a desperate family in need of help with their iguana. Once he opened the "critter" door, he was soon rescuing a Colombian boa, a tegu, and Burmese python, among others, his house quickly resembling the LA Zoo. Jason went on to find all his reptilian (and mammalian) rescues good homes, having placed 1200 to date. After a chance meeting with Paul Gentles from Wildlife Logic on a rattlesnake rescue, Jason relocated Critter Encounters to the Orlando area to provide a sanctuary for critters unable to be returned back to the wild. Since opening sanctuary doors in Orlando, he has performed wildlife shows for over 450,000 people, wrangled reptiles for 8 movies, been on 12 television programs and even assisted on a photo shoot with Cindy Margolis. Jason's goal is to spark passion for wildlife so that there can be an overall stronger commitment toward conservation. Amigos Founder Christine Driscoll is thrilled to be partnering with Jason in Orlando.
Jason will be bringing baby racoons, a baby squirrel and a baby pig who are currently being bottle fed. Donations will be appreciated!

Florida Doggie Paws Rescue is an all volunteer, foster based 501 (c) 3 Organization. All donations are Tax Deductible. FDPR is a grass-roots rescue formed by 7 people with one common goal…to save the dogs. Our mission is to responsibly rescue, spay/neuter, rehabilitate, foster and find permanent loving homes for unwanted, abandoned and abused small to medium breed dogs in our community and throughout the State of Florida.
FDPR adopts only to Florida residents.
